The European Union has launched a bold and far-reaching Plastics Strategy aimed at transforming the way plastic is produced, used, and managed across Europe. This initiative is a cornerstone of the EU’s transition toward a circular economy and directly targets one of the biggest environmental challenges of our time – plastic waste.
From Policy to Action: Clear Targets and Concrete Measures
A key part of this transformation is the EU directive on single-use plastics, adopted in May 2019. This regulation focuses on the 10 most commonly found plastic items on Europe’s beaches and seas, along with lost or abandoned fishing gear, waste that makes up nearly 70% of marine litter.
Starting in 2021, the following single-use plastic items are banned in the EU:
- Cotton bud sticks
- Cutlery, plates, straws, and stirrers
- Balloon sticks
- Food and beverage containers made of expanded polystyrene (including cups)
These items must now be made from sustainable materials or replaced by reusable alternatives.
In addition:
- By 2025, PET beverage bottles must contain at least 25% recycled plastic
- By 2030, all plastic bottles must contain at least 30% recycled content
- Wet wipes, sanitary products, tobacco filters, and plastic cups will carry warning labels to inform consumers about the environmental impact of improper disposal.
